In the early 2000’s, I met Chucky in London—two people from completely different worlds, crossing paths in a city that has a way encouraging exactly that. He was from Zambia, and I was from the Gold Coast, and it was literally love at first sight.
What came next was 20 years of a life built in Zambia, Africa. I was completely out of my depth in a remote farming community, literally as far away from a beach as a human could be. Yet gradually I found my feet, friends, and founded a social enterprise Eden Found, that grew organically along with our three gorgeous children. We worked, we grew, we overcame challenges, and along the way Africa became a second home to me.
So I’ve incredibly fortunate to experience African culture in a way that goes far beyond the surface. Not just seeing it—but living it. Getting to truly know the makers behind the pieces, understanding their craft, their stories, and the rhythm of their work. Through Eden Found, those relationships became something deeply personal, and the makers have become like family. It’s shaped how I see value, craftsmanship, and the meaning behind the things we bring into our homes. Honestly, it’s been just as impactful for me as the makers we work alongside.
Last year, after all those years, we returned to Australia, while keeping our home in Zambia. And we came to own Coastal Drift, an enterprise that celebrates handcrafted items that are little miracles created by hand, that in the most dignified and beautiful way ensures our makers can carry on in the way they have for many generations.
It’s always been important to me that each piece stands on its own—that it’s so beautiful, functional, and impactful it doesn’t need the story of its maker to justify its place in your home. But when you do know the story, it becomes something more entirely—something impossible to resist.
You’ll see that story woven through everything we do—whether it’s the pieces we create, the hands behind them, or the homes they become part of. Through the stories we tell on our regular visits to our Zambian home, the insights into the lives of the makers or the skills they use to create these products.
As time goes by, we’re seeing a real shift—handcrafted is being valued more than ever, and it means so much to us.
Thank you for letting us bring these incredible pieces into your world.
